Last weekend, I went to Switzerland to visit my friend Fabienne whom I had met in New York this summer! It was a fabulous weekend. I am always so glad when I get the opportunity to reconnect with someone that I was unsure if I would ever get to see again. I had an interesting start to my day because I missed my first train..thank goodness for Eurostar trains! But once I made it back to the land of beautiful snow-capped mountains, I was extremely happy! Fabienne was right there in the little tiny town or Arth-Goldau waiting for me We went straight on to the venue where she was performing that night. It was so nice to see her perform a Broadway review with a men’s choir and a guy that graduated from Juilliard. After the show, we went on back to her apartment which is in the outskirts of Sempach and right around the corner from Luzern. It is on a different lake and from her living room, she has the perfect view of the town, lake, and mountains. The next day, we went to her family’s house. It was so interesting for me to be able to see homelife of a different culture not to mention that her house was in the best location in the world. From her living room, a picture perfect view of mt. Pilatus awaits you! PERFECTION! Her family was so nice to me even though I cannot speak a lick of German and they didnt really understand any of my English. Luckily, her dad speaks a bit of Italian! We had a nice relaxing day which was exactly what I needed from all the built up stress of juries, finals, and other issues here. We went on a walk around her house and up the road to have the best view of the alps that exists…rigi on your left, pilatus on your right! All the while, I was thinking,” just a little over a year ago, i was up there looking down on all this countryside, and now I am getting the other perspective and loving it too!” Then she was performing again that night! After the show, we hung out with the choir in the restaurant and I got to witness the kind of german drinking rituals that you see in movies and wonder if it really happens…I have the answer: yes. One table led a song where they ended up raising the table over their head and then got under the table in a different part…it was entertaining to say the least! My last day there, Fabienne had to go to work so I caught a train out of Luzern. I got to spend my last morning strolling around Luzern with Starbucks in hand recalling all the things I did there last summer like it was yesterday. It was perfect. I got to visit one of my best friends I had made this summer and get caught up with our lives while experiencing another european culture!!

Now, I am back in Arezzo and am starting to think about packing. I am done with academic work and performing for the last time tonight. I am so ready to be back to familiar territory and people. I just wish you could’ve been here with me through it all, but can’t wait to tell you all about it in person! Trust me, I took so many pictures, you will feel like you are there!

Until then….

This weekend, I went to visit the lovely town of Montepulciano! It is the highest hill town in Tuscany, although not the hilliest…ha! I was so fortunate to have a glorious day to visit. Clear sky, 65 degrees, quiet little town that is filled with many wineries because that is their claim to fame: vino nobile di montepulciano and rosso di montepulciano! The best part of this is that you can taste the wines at the local wineries! For all of those Twilight fans, Montepulciano is also featured in the new movie and it is the town where Harry Potter’s journals come from- who knew the center of Tuscany could be the center of Hollywood?! It was a sleepy town- but it was very relaxing. I got caught up on all my personal journalling while eating lunch on a rooftop terrace overlooking tuscany! It is said to have the best view of anywhere and I believe it! I also got to practice some italian because no one spoke any english- which was really fun. I wish that we had to use our italian because I think I would actually be able to speak it with ease if I didn’t live a bunch of americans…oh well! This week is pretty low stress- although I have two performances this week- but then I am off to Switzerland to visit my friend Fabienne and see her perform! I can’t wait to be back in Luzern- the town that keeps drawing me back. Both of my previous two trips to europe have included Luzern- so why not this one too! Plus, I can’t wait to see someone who shares the same ideals as me..ah happy memories of Manhattan this summer! I’m coming back to the states soon…2 weeks from tomorrow!

Venice is truly the most unique place on earth- and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring some of the nooks and crannies on the islands of Venezia and Murano. When we arrived on Thursday, we took a water taxi on to our hotel. It was located in the Drusdoro ? region and ended up being quite convenient to the Vaparetto, the water bus. We had a tour guide walk us over to San Marco and to take a tour of the Doge’s Palace. St. Mark’s wasn’t nearly as huge as I have imagined it my entire life, but I guess its just because I have seen so many huge cathedrals while I have been here (St. Peters and Milano’s Duomo)… But the really unique thing about St. Mark’s is all the Byzantine mosaics. I went back later on my own to go to the museo and get a close-up look at the mosaics- definitely worth it! Mosaics blow my mind just because they are soooo intricate. I also got to see the real bronze horses instead of the imitations that are now on the outside terrace. Then, we went on to the Doge’s Palace which was quite beautiful- but sadly, you couldn’t take pictures. It was interesting to see the governmental side of old Venice including the prison across the Bridge of Sighs which is still covered in advertisements. Thursday evening, we went to a Rick Steve’s recommended restaurant which was good and close to our hotel- which was important since we had all been up since 6am with no break. Friday, our whole group minus Sam and Jackie took an excursion to Murano. I had set out to find my piece of Murano glass! Once we arrived on the quaint island, we went to see a glass blowing at one of the local factories. They had a nice gift shop but nothing that topped a piece of glass that I had seen early in Venice- but several left laden down with vases, chess sets, and other glass objects! We made our way down the main drag in Murano which was shop after shop of glass- some more gallery style and others just purely souvenir shops. Still- nothing that tempted me. I guess sometimes you just find what you want when you aren’t looking so hard. After we stopped at a little place for lunch..mine consisting of a spritz and a pear that I bought from the produce boat on the canal..I went on to the glass museum. The others wanted to shop more or head on to Burano or back to Venice. The museum was very small but had several interesting objects and more antiqued murano glass. It had an exhibit that showed all the different ingredients in making the famed Murano glass which was very interesting. I luckily met up with part of our group that was headed back to Venice. Once we arrived, I went on to Ca’ Rezzocino, an art museum of the Venetian masters. Everyone else went to the Guggenheim which houses more modern art but I have seen enough Picasso and Pollock in my day to satisfy my appetite- plus I guess my experience at the Guggenheim in New York might have subconsciously made me not care to go. Anyhow, I had a peaceful and beautiful time at Ca’ Rezzocino. The two floors were set up more like a small gallery- like the Borghese in Rome or the Frick collection in NYC and I really prefer that atmosphere. The third floor was more like a the main gallery which house so many amazing Italian artists I had never heard tell of. I will eventually look them up and tell you if you are interested. I finally found an Italian art museum that wasn’t dedicated to the Baroque style of depicting all the saints and Mary a million times- this is why God invented landscapes too! After I left the museum, I headed on back to the hotel to meet the others for dinner. On my way, I stopped in the shop next to our hotel where I had seen the piece of glass that I had fallen in love with. I decided that I was going to buy it since I had been all over Murano and had not found anything more reasonable or beautiful or artistic. It is a gorgeous lamp- but only the globe is glass. The base is brushed chrome and the glass is green with aqua on the inside, so when its lit is this ethereal blend of blue and green. The design on the exterior is made with brown, blue, and green and is more organic and artistic than the typical busy swirl of Murano style glass. Once I get home and I have it set up- pictures will surface! I could not have been happier to find my piece of glass and it be functional instead of just a sitting do-dad. That evening, we went in search of the Samantha Brown recommended restaurant with the enormous wine glasses…but it was super expensive and not as an authentic atmosphere as I had envisioned. So we kept looking for a place and happened upon a very nice place. We were near the Rialto bridge so it was more populated! It was nice to have a big group dinner although it can be kind of hectic to be with that many people. After dinner, Tiffany and I rode the vaparetto back because we splurged the extra 2 euros to have a 24 hour pass. The grand canal is gorgeous in both the day and the night- but you notice more details at night because some buildings are lit up with the lights reflecting in the water. This morning, I rose and shone and rode the vaparetto all the way up and down the grand canal. I wanted to get some pictures of Venice before it came to life with all the excess tourists- and I was quite successful! It was great to be able to ride past the Rialto market and it be getting shipments from little ships- ha! One of my favorite things to do too is to look down all the tiny alleyways that dead end into the canal- which I find completely bizarre and hilarious! Luckily I never ended up on one of those little streets! I rode down to the Salute church in hopes of having enough time to actually go in before my pass ran out. But I only had enough time to pop off and take a few pictures with the church and the little frog boy. But the tip of the island proves to be one of the best views of St. Mark’s piazza with the belltower and Doge’s Palace. Then I got the 9:28 boat and my ticket expired at 9:29. I don’t know if it was completely legal for me to ride the boat but I did and had no issues- thank goodness. Then I went up to the S. Tomaso stop to go to the Scuola della Rocco and the church. On my way I went into a little cafe which had an interesting drink called noccioloso- hazelnut cream, cream of coffee, and espresso-which was very delicious and warm! I found the scuola after winding around a bit and I was so glad that I decided to go! It had so many Tintorello paintings and frescoes. The main room was quite big and every wall was covered with paintings and the ceiling was comprised of about 24 individual paintings. The rest of the day, I moseyed my way back to the hotel through winding streets and tiny alleys but didn’t get lost. We had to leave at noon but I feel like I will be back to Venice- at least I hope to! I still need have a gondola ride to take with someone special someday!

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of working with Jill Feldman in a 3 day intensive masterclass in Baroque music. Little did we actually know that it was supposed to be all Baroque rep but we managed. I was really glad to revise a piece I had done this summer and another piece I am working on right now. I also got to work on my French diction with her too because she lived in Paris for 17 years. Basically, Jill has lived an almost perfect life…moved to Europe on a grant, then got a phone call to sing in a chorus in Paris and ended up living there for 17 years and now she lives in Tuscany. She also has a family- which is kind of a feat for someone who ends up being a professional singer and teacher. I think everyone got a lot out of working with her..I know I did at least. It was nice to see something that everyone had been bitching and moaning about to turn into something everyone ultimately enjoyed for once. Agreement is something very rarely found over here. This weekend I am off to Venice, which I could not be more excited about!!! Until then…

Last Sunday, I decided to go up to Lucca for the day. My original inspiration for this trip was to see Puccini’s birthplace and museum and to just explore another Tuscan town. Little did I know that I was stumbling upon an enormous comic and games festival. However, it made for a very interesting day. Unfortunately, Puccini’s house is closed for “restoration” or never opened..I got varied answers from the locals I asked. But nevertheless, I found lots of interesting things to do and visit. First, I went to the Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Mansi which housed a beautiful collection of art and was an artistic villa on its own accord. They had several intricately delicate venetian chandeliers as well! I was lucky to get in before they closed their doors at 1:30. However, my new friend, Philippa, wasn’t so lucky. We met at the doors to the museo and she was not allowed in..but luckily I had a friend to pal around with the rest of the day. She was an interesting British woman living in Bologna whose children were in Lucca for the festival. We grabbed lunch at Cafe Tosca before touring the various churches and observing the spectacle of the comic people. I saw people dressed up as everything from guitar heroes, mary poppins and bert, jack sparrow, teenage mutant ninja turtles, and other characters I couldn’t recognize probably because they were Italian. We went to the Cathedral di San Martino and saw the first sculptural piece of the Renaissance, Quercia’s tomb of Ilaria del Carretto. We also went to the church San Michele in Foro which was quite beautiful and had a della Robbia Madonna! I was so glad that I decided to venture on and see more of Tuscany even if I did go alone. It was hysterical to see all the crazy people dressed up and doing mundane things in a historical environment – quite an odd juxtaposition. I needed a good dose of comic relief- and boy, I did get literally comic relief. ha!

Sorry I haven’t written in forever…but I have now lived through Art Tour, which I immensely enjoyed, and Fall break…but now its back to work to finish out my time here. Art tour took me to Assisi, Florence twice, and Siena. I had a great time seeing the 2 churches in Assisi despite the schizophrenic weather which left us all completely soaked. In Florence, I went to the Uffizi and met up with a Furman graduate that has actually been interning there- so we got the inside scoop of the art gallery. My favorite piece was definitely the Botocelli “Primavera”. It is just constructed so intricately I could’ve probably stayed there for hours in awe. I ended up going to the Pitti Palace too! I was glad I had enough time to squeeze the Palatine Galleries into my day! We had to be mindful of the time because the trains were supposed to go on strike at 9..but we all made it back to Arezzo safe and sound. The next time in Florence took us to the museum of the duomo, Santa Maria Novella, the Medici tombs and the principi chapel which was the highlight of my day. The Michelangelo tombs of the Medici’s feature his Dawn & Dusk and Night & Day sculptures which are beautiful. Then Siena was very nice. We basically just went through the church, baptistry, museum. One really cool thing about the museum is that you can climb up a bunch of teeny, tiny, spiral stairs but then you have a perfect view of Siena.

But..Fall break was fabulous because I had no work to worry about and I met up with my mama! I took the train all day long to Zurich and finally made it there by 11:30 that night. She was in the lobby waiting anxiously for me to arrive. Zurich was great- and we lucked into finding a Seurat exhibit at the Kuntshaus museum. So I finally got to see some non-italian art, which was a relief for my eyes! I prefer the French style of art in general I have decided. We got to see several Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Renoir, Picasso, Warhol, and more Chagall! The Chagall stainglass windows in the Fraumunster are probably my favorite thing in Zurich! I could sit there and look at them for hours…and therefore we did look at them and found all of the little details for about an hour…happiness!

Then onto Lake Como where we relaxed by the Duomo and I had a fun experience with a native Italian. Ask me about it…and I will tell you the story. We took the boat on Lake Como to Lenno, Varenna, and Cernobbio. The reason I went to Lenno was so I could go to Villa Balbianello. It is absolutely one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It is also where the wedding from star wars episode 1 was taped. Little did I know that it was a hike and a half over to the Villa when I began my journey with an hour til the boat I needed to catch to go on to Varenna. But thankfully my Arezzo training of climbing hills quickly has proven to be successful and I made my trip. I was so ready to be there once I finally arrived and I took about 300 pictures in 30 minutes, which may be a new record for me. It was just so beautiful and I wanted to capture every aspect I could so I could enjoy it later without a time restraint ticking in front of my face. In order to have some extra time, I opted to get a water taxi back…which was definitely worth it! It was fun to be on the lake in a little speed boat! We made it on to Varenna, Rick Steve’s pick for Lake Como and had lunch at a little pizzeria. It was a nice sleepy town that was reminiscent of Cinque terre. We then took the boat back towards Como to Cernobbio to visit Villa d’Este. It was beautiful as well and we had a lovely tea there!

Next was Milan! We went down to the Duomo- which is the 3rd largest church in Europe and the largest Gothic Cathedral in Italy. But with this reputation preceding it, I was expecting to be blown away by the size of it, but I guess I have just gotten spoiled by going to all these amazing places all the time because it didn’t seem enormous. Actually nothing in Milan seemed as enormous as I imagined it. It was all still beautiful though: the duomo, galleria, la scala..all amazing! I also got to go up on the roof of the duomo which was really cool to get that close to all the gothic architecture! Then, we began our La Scala experience by going to the museum. It was great and had so many little relics of opera composers and performers. I was so excited to see Maria Malibran in the museum because she is so overlooked and people dont usually know who she is! After perusing it all pretty thoroughly and seeing the costumes of Manon Lescaut, Carmen, and Aida, we went on to the gift shop where I got all my souvenirs for fall break! Then we went on to pick up a sandwich at the cafe next door and to anxiously awaiting the performance of Mozart’s Idomeneo. Once we got to our box in the 4th tier, I was soooo excited! It is absolutely gorgeous with all the rich reds and golds like most other opera houses. The performance was unforgettable; I haven’t heard so many beautiful voices in one sitting at a time before in my life. It was even more incredible than I had imagined it would be! I will go back to Milan just to go see another opera at La Scala someday! The next day we went to the Pinacoteca di Brera which was another great museum. The highlight there was Raphael’s newly restored “Marriage of the Virgin.” That night I think we had one of the best meals so far in italy at Solferino. Eggplant and mozzarella pasta, goat cheese, steak in vintage wine and honey, and chocolate and pear pie! It was a night of culinary bliss!

In Firenze, we went to the Accademia and saw Michelangelo’s David! He is just so tall that it is a miracle that Michelangelo could actually sculpt it. All of his uncompleted works leading up to David were also very interesting to be able to see his process. I also went to Dante’s house and got to see some of the original manuscripts of the Divine Comedy. The next day I did a little shopping and that night we went to see a small production of La Traviata. The following day we went to the Bargello, where Donatello’s bronze David is…so now I have seen all the main Davids of Italy. There are just so many things to see in Florence but now I feel like I have seen most of the main museums and sights!

On to Arezzo where we went to one of my favorite places to get a crostine. Then I took Mom to our favorite gelateria which she definitely approved of! I then went back to Charleston Enoteca to introduce mom to Paolo! We had a nice visit and then went back to see the church of San Francesco. The next day I showed mom around the accademia and then took a tour of arezzo including the duomo, piazza grande, and the corso. It was nice to be able to show her my world over here.

Then I went down to Rome for an evening on Tuesday night basically for dinner and a few good views of Rome. I really wish that I could’ve stayed instead of coming back to a crazy week of chapters upon chapters of music history and test tomorrow!

whew…thats a lot! hope you made it through it all!!

This past weekend a group of us escaped to the Cinque terre which is a set of 5 towns connected by hiking trails. They were all beautiful and different from one another, but I enjoyed them all! It was really nice to get on a train and escape the stress that is starting to get overwhelming here at the Accademia. Haley, Emilee, Catherine, and I took an earlier train, and actually got to our home base of Riomaggiore by dinner time! Once we finished our ascent to the top of Riomaggiore, we went to a great restaurant which had their own specially made house wine from the town. The Cinque terre is famous for being the home of pesto and a special white wine and dessert wine- all of which I sampled during my weekend! The others finally arrived slightly after midnight- crazy italian trains! Anyhow, on Saturday we got up and started on our hike from Riomaggiore to Manarola. This is the simplest part and the only trail I actually did. It is called the via dell’amore…and even though it was insanely crowded, it was definitely romantic- that is if you had someone to be romantic with-ha! People have carved their names on the rocks, plants, graffitied the walls to an enclosed part which was rather odd but still quite cool! Once we got to Manarola, I had found my happy place! We walked down to the pier and there is a beautiful huge, sunbathing rock connected to the pier. So, naturally I changed into my bathing suit and found my place to just soak up some sun and catch up a bit on writing in my journal. The others were determined to hike all the trails- so off they went, and I stayed to enjoy my piece of paradise. The weather was perfect- sunny but not hot, nice wind, sound of the waves to completely free my mind from the set in craziness I have been experiencing as of late. I finally felt so happy and at peace with everything in my life for the first time in a while. I had the opportunity to think and clear my mind which I ironically don’t make time to do during a typical day. (My beautiful surroundings probably uplifted my mood as well!) I went on to Corniglia, the third town which sits on top of the most massive hill in the world. When I got off the train, I still had 382 steps to climb to make it to the actual town…but once I arrived the view was great! I met up with the others for a quick lunch of pizza and one of my juice boxes and then they were back off to the trails again. I went on to Vernazza- one of the larger towns- and found a beautiful beach and pier. After browsing through some of the shops, including some art galleries and ceramic stores, I found myself on the beach again with a pina colada in hand pretending I was in Hawaii. I had forewarned everyone I was putting myself on island time for the weekend and I think they were all wishing they had put themselves on island time as well since the hikes kept getting more challenging. We all hung out at the beach for a while, while some swam and others just had some quality relaxation time. Anna decided to stay with me and take the train onto Monterosso al mare- the last of the 5 towns- because the last hike was still more challenging. We met the cutest little italian boy in the playground- and he definitely knew more italian at the age of 2 or 3 than I do- fail. Once we arrived at Monterosso, we went down to their rocky beach and took pictures right at sunset. We explored a few little shops and ran right into the rest of our group! Then, it was time for dinner, so with the help of our rick steve’s guide book, we went to a little restaurant that had lots of seafood specialties. I was brave and actually got a shrimp pasta- mind you all the shrimp were complete shrimp, heads, eyeballs, brains….but they were yummy! By the time we were done eating, we were all ready to make it back to Riomaggiore so we could go to the beach in the morning. On Sunday, Emilee and I went on down to town a little earlier and spent some time at the marina at Riomaggiore- which was a lot more beautiful than I expected. All the colors just pop so well with the tealy blue of the mediterranean juxtaposed with the peach and salmon of all the buildings- bella! We ended up going back to Monterosso and shopping a bit and getting in the water- although it was overcast. It was a fabulous weekend though- I loved being able to fully relax with the sun and the sand and the water! Plus, I got to take a lot of great photography which also makes me extremely happy! Hopefully, our other 2 free weekends can be as successful!

Why is it that Italy is supposedly the most romantic place on earth yet all the people here hate each other because they are from the wrong part of town? Why is it that everyone that has been on this program before absolutely fell in love with it even though everyone, if it has been like our group, fights over tiny things that can drive you completely crazy? I really wish someday things could be like how they should be or how they appear to be. Yes, the whole appearance versus reality motif is great in novels but I would prefer my novel of a life to be less dramatic and more real. Please can we talk about our lives instead of the next test or assignment? Who is going to care about that once it is over? I want to be able to reflect on my time in Italy and not wonder, hmm, did I actually develop relationships with the people I spent time with or were we all just robots going to class and attempting to make music. I am overly emotional a lot of the time but is that such a bad thing for a true musician to be? Thoughts?

Roma, Roma, Roma

It was so great- but so exhausting! We had to leave on Thursday at 6:55 am to walk to the train station to make our 7:45 train and then we had a pleasant trip down to Rome. We arrived around 11 or so and checked into our “3-star” hotel…and then off for lunch and visiting Santa Maria Maggiore and Saint John Lateran. I was excited about going to S Maria Maggiore because it was the one I have researched all the musical history on. Palestrina got his start as a choirboy there and was later maestro di cappella which is pretty cool. Plus it is the oldest original church in rome with byzantine mosaics. And Bernini is buried there…anyway the list goes on and on….So we did our tours and I took lots of photography. Once we were done with my church we moved on to St. John Lateran which used to be the papal church back in the day so it is huge! Once I was done taking a lot more photography, we paraded down the way to see the Colosseum and all the ancient ruins. Haley, Emilee, and I decided not to go on an actual tour of the Colosseum and wandered down to circo massimo, where they used to race the chariots. Then we meandered through a bunch of little streets around the forum and palatino and wound up having the best view of the roman forum anyone could ask for. Thankfully, there was a wall that we could perch on and let it sink into us that we were actually there. Just sitting there with the wind in my hair, and overlooking a part of Rome that I didn’t really think would mean anything to me- meant so much to me. It was probably my favorite moment in rome because it was so relaxing. Once we decided to leave our beautiful find, we were on a hunt for gelato! But before we made it to the gelateria, we went through the capitoline hill and saw all the naked statues. Then we went down to the tiber river and across to the ghettoes to find an authentic, less expensive, not aimed towards tourist place and did just that! We had dinner at Carlo Menta. I had lasgna for the first time in italia and the best house vino so far! On our hike back to the termini where our hotel was, we passed more ruins. But there were so many cats in them- and thus, I deemed the square ‘foro di gatti’. Day due in Roma began with the tour of the Vatican. Our tour guide came to the hotel and drove us over- thankfully! He was such a great guide and has a musical background in piano and has worked for la scala etc…so it was appropriate and he knew a lot about the musical history too! I always imagined that the Vatican museums are huge…but really they are enormous! Hall after hall of statues, paintings, tapestries, but my favorite part: the ceilings! I think I looked up more in the 3 hours we were at the vatican than I ever have in my life. Its not as if the excessive decoration of the rooms is ornate enough but then, boom, another beautifully frescoed ceiling! Luckily, we got to go to the Raphael rooms despite some attitudes in our group- but they were some of my favorite rooms in the vatican. The sistine chapel was great…but way too crowded to actually be able to enjoy the art and the overall presence of the space. I can only imagine how terrible it is in the summer because I felt like I was playing a game as I was taking shot after shot of photography around alllll the tourists. St. Peter’s is too big in my opinion. I do not even feel like I saw much of it even though I walked all over it. There is just too much going on everywhere for your brain to actually make sense of any of it. A wedding was even taking place in one of the chapels- which is completely romantic- but I sure wouldn’t want thousands of uninvited guests at my wedding even if I could have it at St. Peters. After the tour, we went to lunch at a place that is known for their ‘sexy wine’ which is a dessert strawberry wine. The owner gave us a free bottle at the end of our meal and it was refreshing and so sweet that it didn’t even taste like wine. Mom, you would even like this one! Then off to the Pantheon and S Maria sopra Minerva- which were both great but slightly unimpressive after the Vatican. Then, a group of us headed to the Trevi Fountain and I tossed in my coin to guarantee my return trip to rome. Once we made our way through the crowd, we headed up the corso to Piazza di Popolo where a Mtv concert was taking place that evening- making it not seem like we were in italy anymore. After going in S Maria di Popolo, we headed on to the Spanish steps and the sun was just starting to set as we climbed the stairs- making rome look even more beautiful! After people watching, we went in Caffè Greco- the oldest cafe in rome, and I had an espresso and bought a cute tin of tea! It used to be Listz, Goethe, Keats, Shelley, and others hangout- so I thought that was pretty cool. We also happened to be on the 5th avenue of Rome, so there were many a designer window to peer in and hope that one day I can own something by Dior or Valentino. For dinner, we stumbled across a great place which turned out to be amazing! Great night!
On Saturday, we went to the Borghese Galleries- which was one of my favorite things in Rome. So many Bernini statues that you can get so close to but sadly cannot take pictures of. I think I probably enjoyed myself more because I wasn’t taking pictures and carrying my ridiculously heavy purse around the galleries. My favorite is Daphne and Apollo because it is so intricate. What I thought was so cool too is the various hues in the marble that Bernini created in one piece of marble. The thin leaves of Daphne’s fingers and toes look like a creamy rich ivory instead of the stark white of the bodies. Then we strolled through the central park of Rome- Villa Borghese Park. Another great experience of the day was getting gelato at San Crispino- where the signature flavor is honey. I had plum and honey and it was luxurious! We also went to the Antique art gallery for free which was a nice touch to our afternoon before we headed back home to Arezzo. Overall, the weekend went by quickly but I got to see everything I wanted to in Rome. I like the metropolitan-ness of Rome and I kept talking about New York and comparing the two as I have done some when writing about it…sorry. I so desperately wish I were a New Yorker! (but i will be someday soon) I was glad I got to relax some in Rome even though we walked everywhere. Things are starting to feel better again but I am sure another wave will hit me soon enough.
